Is a called stinging because of it stinging hairs called trichomes on the leaves and stems, which act like hypodermic needles.  Grow's 3 to 7 ft tall in the summer . It bears small greenish or brownish numerous flowers.. The leaves and stems are very hairy with non-stinging hairs but many are stinging.

Radioactive Fallout can you survive?? PT2

This is a 2 part post....CLICK HERE for the first part.

I always tell people to have Potassium Iodine on hand enough for your family plus.
Click here for some info on it from the CDC.

Make sure to keep informed by radio or TV. The decision to take potassium iodide should be based on info you get from the national health authorities. They will be in the best position to decide if it is needed and in which areas.

Also a reminder...boiling water DOES NOT remove radiation.  There are some filters out there that claim to.So water stock up is important.

Some Medical Herbs for radiation exposure.

Here is a list of medicinal herbs that I recommend you take for radiation exposure.  You can take them as a tea, a tincture or even eaten.

BUT!!!!!! BIG BUT
I have come across a lot of websites that say you can take this herb and that herb in a pinch instead of Potassium Iodine.
the answer is NO. It can hurt you more. It has to be Potassium Iodine. So stock up! Really have some. I have found it in a few places. But if you have a good doctor they may be kind enough to give it to you. I am lucky mine finds my prepperness to be quaint. But I have no thyroid...so this does not apply to me.  Radiation goes after the thyroid gland, this is your immune system...without these hormones....ya die...that is why it is such a big deal to take the potassium Iodine...to protect those glands. Because I do not have them, I need to take meds for the rest of my life. And again...I have a double script. Every month I get and extra month....and I have a major stockpile of it and have it at every place that I may go. I also had to learn how to processes rabbit glands to make the med. Just in case and for if I run out...or if I want to help others that do not have their thyroid glands. But you do not want to lose it!!!

Once you are done with you Potassium Iodine you will want to get the rest of it out of you....look at the chart above....this is just to show how much radiation is in things we do in our daily lives...You get up to  SIX YEARS of everyday radiation in ONE CT SCAN! That is crazy. So you want to have these herbs to detox this out of you.You want to have them pre radiation situation. In Jars, Mylar or at the least have seeds for them.

So these are the herbs that can help you clean some of this out of your system.
The herbs that people recommend are more for if you have had an X ray done. Or event even everyday exposure form computer, cell phone, microwaves, the sun, even some of our foods.

Little known fact, Grand Central Station is one of the most radioactive stations. The walls of the station, and its foundations, are built with granite, a rock that naturally holds radiation. The radiation levels produced by the station are so high that they actually exceed the levels that nuclear power plants are legally allowed to emit.

Any who.....I think that is what people mean when they say you can take Burdock Root or Cilantro Leaf for radiation,,,,or for after you are done with the PI. NOT IN PLACE OF or with!!

But because we do have daily radiation and it is worth touching base on a few of the helpful herbs to help clean your body of them. And or to clean them out after a fallout.

We will start with
I am going to say using tincture are your best option. which you can make with the herbs yourself and keep in glass jars to keep them safe.  AND ALWAYS talk to your doctor first before taking herbs as meds! I do!

  • Burdock Root You can ingest 15 to 20 drops of tincture 3 times a day. This will help clean your system out....but do not do if prego..
  • Cilantro Helps with cleansing the body of heavy metals and it will help some with radiation. 1-3 drop of Cilantro is a good dose depending on body weight. You can even just eat it but it would have to be a lot.
  • Ginseng Is known to help with the side effects of radation expoure.  15 to 20 drops of Tincture 3 time a day.
  • Basil is help with a lot of the side effect of exposure....but for it to help you are looking at taking a whopping 40 to 60 drops a 3 times a day. Which is crazy!! I also read that you can just do a tea with 1 tsp of dried leaf in 8oz water 3 times a day???? (the 40 to 60 seems to be wrong to me)
Other things to have on hand
  • Bentonite clay or any other edible clay  helps remove toxins and get this you put a teaspoon in a glass of juice or pure water. But you must drink a lot of water throughout the day if you do this.
  • Extra virgin olive oil (cold pressed) helps protect the cell membranes.
  • Sea Salt and Baking SodaBaths- add 1 pound of sea salt and 1 pound of baking soda and soak in chlorine-free water for 20 minutes. Then rinse with cool water. You can also 1 pound of betonite, or other clay, to the sea salt and baking soda when soaking which increases the removal of radiation. Some specialists who work with radioactive isotopes use this method to remove radiation from their body. If you have been exposed to an abnormally high level of radiation you can use this method three times a week for one month.
  • Milk Thistle  helps the liver deal with the effects of toxicity of radiation poisoning.
A few other foods that can help
Onions, garlic, green and black tea, cabbage, broccoli all citrus fruits.

Yes you can sprout and grow dry beans

Beans, beans, their good for the heart, the more you eat the less stockpile you have.

This is more of a reminder post.  And a you should give it a try now so you know how to.

Approximately 1,200 come in those 1# bags. Next planting season give it a try or do some indoors. It is a good thing to see how they grow and learn how to harvest them.
Beans are high in starch, protein, and dietary fiber, and are also a good source of folic acid, selenium, iron, potassium, thiamine, vitamin B6, magnesium, and zinc. WOW BEANS ARE really good of the heart!

Select beans with a bright color, which indicates fresh seeds. Do not plant  beans with cracked seed coats or pinholes, or the germination percentage will be low beside you can eat those, waste not want not.

 http://godspace.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/p10102491.jpg

Some beans grow like plants and many grow like vines. Because the dry beans do not say what kind they are it is more of a be ready for what ever happens. A garden trick is plant sunflowers and or corn with them and if they are vine they will grow up them.  And it is a great space saver.

Here are a few pdf's about growing beans
How to sprout Click Here
How to grow Click Here
This one has some great info Click Here

Remember all dry beans can be turned into a flour. You would use the same technique as corn   CLICK HERE . You can roast them for a nicer taste before grinding. Great for flat breads, chips, to thicken soups or bread meats.

A few medicinal uses beans have :

Green Beans
Reconstructs the nervous system , Diuretic, Depurative , Anti-infective
Tonic for the liver and pancreas

 White Kidney Beans
Diabetes

White kidney beans are an inhibitor of alpha-amylase, an enzyme that promotes the breakdown of starch in the human gastrointestinal tract. Ingestion of this inhibitor helps prevent the breakdown of the carbohydrate in the intestine in foods so the less sugars are absorbed as fat cells for future use.

Mung Beans
Treats and healing burns, reportedly without scars, as well as its recent use in treating acne and blackheads. In summer when it is eaten to prevent heatstroke, heat rash or prickly heat.

Legumes
Many legumes have been used in folk medicine. Isoflavones from soybeans and other legumes have more recently been suggested both to reduce the risks of cancer and to lower serum cholesterol . Soybean and soyfood phytoestrogens have been suggested as possible alternatives to hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women.

Make alcohol and fuel with beans
And soy can be turned into fuel and booze (booze you would have to treat it like a potato and boil the mash) Click here for some info REMEMBER boiling would be key because beans produce an  Alcohol dehydrogenase which would need to be cooked off. but it can be done and greats are and easy crop

Sorry I really had to post this song :)

Radioactive fallout can you survive?

This is a 1 of 2 part post....part 2 will be posted on Saturday.

This is such a Big Topic and I know that I may not have covered everything. But this is some basics.

MAP TOOL
First lets start off with this great tool. Click Here
Enter your address at the tool,  this will give you an idea of how far will be effected. I entered the nuke plant in my state in to see how much time I would need to get ready...(see below for that info)  You have to zoom out to see the .25 and .1 psi damage range.

And here is a great PDF  Nuclear War Survival Skills   Click Here

Lets talk Nuclear weapons and plants.
So many of us live near plants or at the least have some concerns about bombs.  This is something I have yet to really address in my blog. But in this modern day there have been issues with nukes and at the least we should have some basics for this. Lets approach this as if you can not make it out of the blast zone.  You should have some kind of a plan in place. Also know,  if you are not in the zone even the passing radiation can effect you long term survival. So Protect yourself and family.

Ok so first some basics
Lets start with the range of a blast  in a 1 mile area the people in this area may not be so lucky. Then you have the people in a 5 mile area will have some damage done to them. From the 5 to 20 mile mark you will most likely see a mushroom cloud giving you a moment to get underground. From that point on you have a better chance of finding cover and surviving the wave. (check your map tool from above to see what I mean)

Fallout shelters
Ever notice those signs (fallout shelter signs)? Back in the 50's building were made to be fallout shelters....But have you seen any new buildings be labeled as one? .That is because back in the day Civil defense use to stock these shelter and they were in every community. Now they do not...many of those building have been knocked down. And close to all of them are not stocked anymore.

So what to do
Well first a fallout shelter is an enclosed place.. The word shelter does not me house, car it means underground with 3 feet of soil above the area. When thinking about were to shelter remember this....  you will need a place that will shield you from the blast wave.  It will also have to protect you from radioactive fallout. If you do not have a basement....(which if you do click here for a few ideas, you should have everything down there ready to put up in and instant. Mine is attached to the ceiling and ready to be rolled down and sealed With masks and supply at hand.)  If  you do not have a basement...look around where you live find a building that has a basement. and have a tubs of supply's to get to it. And a hammer to break glass if you have to to get in. If that is not an option find a room in your house that can be encased fast. With a table place near a bearing wall. Get under that table and yes I am going to say it..."duck and cover)

What is the timeline of a blast?
The news of a blast will be almost  moments after it happens...remember 9/11 it was on the TV almost instantly. The moment you see something like that and know you are in that State...take cover.  The news will tell you were to go...but you want to know long before that! And make sure you have a radio Click here I have 2 of these and some hand helds to go with them.

If you have a fallout shelter you will have enough time to get things secure. If you decide you want to get in your car and bolt, remember....fall out will be happening in a radius of 50 miles from ground zero by the first hour after the explosion. And can spread up to 500 miles ( which will take a half a day to happen) .  Remember the traffic jams that will be happening. These people will be exposed to fall out and it will be a possibly life threatening. If god forbid this is your only choice.....drive through yards....smash a few fences...do what ever you have to to get as far as you can. But reality is if you are caught 10 miles near the blast there is a good chance you will die not necessarily instantly but shortly after.   But if you do survive the blast you still have to be safe from fallout. If you are in a place you don't know or you are that close and have no time..... let that prepper mind guide you. You can make shift. find the safes place right there the bathroom, a closet. do your best to cover the doors and or windows. Shower curtain taped over the will.and door. wet towel over your mouth and nose. Blankets over you.  Something is better than nothing!!

How long till it is safe??
It is all a matter of how close you are. The blast will be the hardest part.
At the least you will need to stay sheltered for 4 days. The closer you are to where it went off, the higher the radioactive fallout levels will be and the long you will need to stay in place. This can be for several weeks! The better your shelter and stockpile the better chance you have. If you are not near you shelter....then think fast and remember all these factors as you run for cover!!! Grabbing what you can.

Ya I have to do it!!! The song for this post is Imagine Dragons - Radioactive

Herb of the Week - Pine

I am setting this up on a separate blog that will eventually
be an easy to use resource down the line.
So click the link below to see it uses and bookmark the blog for weekly installments.

I will be posting an herb of the week every Tuesday. I find it is easy to remember things like this when you get them in small doses.

http://prepperherboftheweek.blogspot.com/2015/04/uses-for-pine.html

There are about 115 species of pines worldwide, although different authorities accept between 105 and 125 species. Pines are native to most of the Northern Hemisphere. The leaves are persistent or deciduous, linear or needle-like. The bark is smooth tp scaly or farrowed. And the pine cones are the fruit. But because there are some many different kinds It is hard to do a basic description.

The Big C

Ok this is to my regular readers. (i will be taking this message down in a day or two) Just wanted people to know I am still blogging just may stop for a few weeks.

I found out this week that I have Cancer. And will be going for surgery next week....because I waited 7 years before telling my doc about something.  I am down playing it because I know that I am a tough son of a gun. But I need to tell people if you have something bothering you for an extended period of time...do not blow it off. Have it checked.

I will be fine with a little surgery and treatment. Had my doctors laughing...they said they never get that kind of reaction when they tell people....well I truly think being positive is the best way to be in life. Laughter is the best medicine!

Ok sooooo any who....next week I may or may not be posting, maybe the week after to....I have a few of the herb ones already done. But I have brain freeze and can not really think. Who knows I may get in the mode on the meds :)  But if I disappear...I will be back.

I do have some friends that are coming by to help get the garden rolling....cuz they know me and my garden. Maybe they will let me share that with ya.

So I want to thank all my reader and all my new ones.....and those angels that help get my shabby little blog out there for people....luv ya's  all!!

This song is for all my angels looking over me and to all you wonderful preppers!! You guys Rock!!

Got Seeds????

Seed banks are an absolute must have.

We know something is going to happen sooner or later. As Preppers, we know that the government is stocking up on canned foods. They even told people to start stockpiling food at one point. Food prices are creeping up faster than paychecks. And between reports of droughts and other weather issues our food supply is being effected greatly. We see soup kitchens and food pantry's seeing more and more average family’s needing help. At some point this is going to hit hard and having a seed bank in your survival stockpile  is becoming more and more of a must have.
I will not even go into the whole GMO issue with farm grown products. But the one thing you should know is when you harvest seeds from your own garden,  and those seeds came from a GMO plant, they will most likely will not be  productive.  They are made that way. They are made so you have to go buy more seeds.
Now I know many people have limited planting space. But do not let the keep you from getting the seeds. You can get really creative with how to make the most of you space.

Never buy seeds in paper. They will not last. When I first started prepping I ran to the store and did just that.  Put them in Mylar bags and  sealed them up. But these will not last.  Second the seeds you get at most stores are hybrid and or gmo seeds.  You really need to spend a little to get decent seeds for saving.

You want seeds that are packed and put in waterproof packaging.  The seeds I packed away I still have but the germination rate...will be low  after time.

If something ever happens you want to have (if possible) non GMO, non hybrid, and preferably heirloom seeds. Packaged right.

As you are living off your stockpiled food your garden can be growing....(if you do not have a garden already). This will make your supply last a lot longer.
But also remember that depending on what hit the fan...you may be stuck hunkering down and the garden will have to wait........But this is why I have several different banks stored.

  • I have seeds that can be planted in container gardens,
  • I have seeds that I can grow in the woods near me were know one hopefully will find them
  • and I have seeds for when things get safe to start a great garden that should be able to feed more than just the people I plan to hunker down with,
I have to remind people of the time frame of all of this. It could be a year or two before you can plant a garden....and the time it takes before you can harvest your first crop. So make sure you have a good size stockpile just in case...the garden has to wait. Never count your chickens as they say.

and remember to rotate and keep and eye on the date of these seeds. of your seeds. The post I posted below stay good for 10 to 25 years. But you may want to crab a new one every few years Just in case. I like the seeds I have for my regular garden so I actually have gotten these a few times.

A few Basic Gardening PDF's
If you are not a gardener. or you have little experience with it I suggest printing a few of these out or saving them to a thumb drive and keeping them with you seeds.
  • PDF on  Roof Top gardens Click Here  We have a bunch of this in my city....it has some great ideas in for potable gardens. And small pouch gardens maybe in indoor ones (if times call for it)
  • PDF on Hydropoic garden.Click Here  In hard times you can get creative if you can not find the stuff...But this is a basic set up
EDIT: I am adding this because someone one that does not like seed vaults brought up some good points. Something else to add to you seed stock is beans (click here for my post on beans). You can try to package them to last longer. I am not sure on how long they will last so I would rotate them every year And also take a look at my plant with protein post for more ideas.

These are the ones I get. the price is good. the product is good. And they are non GMO, non hybrid and they are heirloom. But always shop around and find what makes you feel good. But I promise I am the queen of deals. And this is the best deal. I planted some last year and I planted some I got at the store...these grew with less care and water!  I plan on planting them this year again.
$21.95 this is the best deal lasts a decade in a cool place in a freezer 25 years. And they are from the USA!

Organic Heirloom Seeds Non-Gmo Non-hybrid 2015
